Why the app asks when nothing is happening

Three times a day, Aneroid asks without a trigger. It's the most boring feature in the app, and the only one that makes the rest trustworthy.

18 of 28 patients in a Japanese study noticed that a weather change came before their migraine. That sounds like proof. It isn't, and the calculation that shows why is shorter than you'd think.

64% of patients could point to a day when pressure fell and they felt bad afterwards. But the study never asked about the other half of the story: how often did the same patients feel bad on days when pressure didn't fall at all? Without that figure, 64% is a claim with no denominator.

The figure that's missing from most self-observed patterns

Picture two versions of the same patient. In the first version, she feels bad on 3 out of 10 days with a pressure drop — and on 3 out of 10 days without one. No connection, just randomness landing evenly. In the second version, she feels bad on 3 out of 10 days with a pressure drop, and on 1 out of 10 days without. Here there's a real connection.

From the outside, the two versions look identical. The patient remembers the days it fit: pain and a pressure drop on the same day. That kind of day exists in both versions. What separates them is something nobody remembers at dinner: how often it didn't hurt when pressure didn't fall.

That's exactly the gap a systematic review from 2025 lands on after going through 14 studies of air pressure and migraine: a lack of attention to individual variation is one of the recurring weaknesses in the field. Not because researchers are lazy. Because most datasets only have one half — the days with headaches — and have never systematically asked about the days without.

The control group isn't other people. It's your own quiet days

In an ordinary trial, the control group is a different group of people who don't get the treatment. Aneroid doesn't have another group to compare against — it's still just you. The solution is to build the control group out of your own days: the ones where nothing happened to the pressure.

That's why the app asks three times a day how you're feeling, with no pressure drop beforehand. Those questions produce no drama. They never become the story you tell anyone. But without them, the app has only one column of figures — the days with a pressure drop — and no denominator to hold it up against.

It's the same mistake that meant the review of 14 studies couldn't give a single, confident answer on whether pressure drops increase migraine frequency at all. Some studies found a connection. Others found none. The difference often lies in whether there was anything to compare against.

It's also the mistake two researchers named as far back as 1996, when they held eighteen arthritis patients' own convictions up against fifteen months of measurements. That story is told elsewhere on this site. The point here is different: it's not enough to know that memory can be wrong. You also have to swap an incomplete calculation for a complete one, and that requires a figure from the days when nothing happened.

Aneroid is not medical equipment and makes no diagnoses. The app shows you what your own data points to — including if it points to there being no connection. This isn't health advice; it's a calculation with your own numbers.

The three daily questions with no trigger are the least exciting feature in the app. They're also the only reason a "yes, it's connected" from Aneroid will ever mean anything.
