When the North Sea sends a low
Denmark sits where the Atlantic's low-pressure systems land. That's bad news for dry weather and good news for an experiment that needs pressure swings.
Find Denmark on a weather chart of the North Atlantic, and look at where it sits. Not on the edge of anything. Right where most of it ends up. We sit in the North Atlantic storm track — the route systems follow once they've formed over open water and swing in towards north-west Europe. That's why Danish summers can turn from sunshine to wind in an afternoon, and why the barometer in your phone rarely gets to sit still for long here.
The systems that drift in over us aren't random. They form where cold air from the north meets warm, moist air from the Atlantic, and they draw energy from exactly that contrast the whole way until they hit land. Denmark sits flat and unprotected at the end of that journey — no mountain range to slow them down before they're over us.
Good for the experiment, bad for the patio
It's the same trait, seen from two sides. For a garden party, frequent low-pressure systems are a nuisance. For an experiment trying to find out whether there's a link between air pressure and anything at all, it's an advantage — you can't measure a link with a variable that doesn't vary. Had Denmark sat under a stable subtropical high-pressure belt, the barometer would stand still for weeks, and there would be nothing to hold up against anything else. Here, there is.
Three words, used again and again
Pressure tendency — NOAA's term for how pressure has behaved over the last three hours — is divided into three categories: falling, rising, steady. In a climate with frequent front passages, all three come into play often, weekly rather than rarely. That means an app asking how you feel when the pressure is moving in practice gets to ask under all three conditions — and the control questions, the ones asked without a trigger, land on just as many calm days as turbulent ones.

Part of the point is that the figure falling in Esbjerg means the same as the figure falling in Bergen or Glasgow. The World Meteorological Organization has collected the rules for how air pressure is measured in its own handbook on instruments and methods of observation — a shared standard that makes the pressure drop ahead of a front the same quantity, no matter which coast along the storm track it hits first. Denmark just happens to be a place it hits often.
There's no guarantee in it. Some weeks one system passes through. Others, none. But over a season the variation is there, and it's the variation the whole project stands or falls on.
Frequent pressure swings don't mean there's a link for you — only that there's enough data to check whether there is. Aneroid is not medical equipment and may just as well end up showing that there's nothing to find.
