Meteorology also measures over three hours

Aneroid looks at the pressure change over three hours. That figure isn't made up — it's the world standard, and has been long before apps.

Below the dial in Aneroid there's a small line of text, something like −4.4 hPa over 3 hours. It looks like a number an app developer picked because it fit neatly into a sentence. It isn't. It's meteorology's own measure of whether pressure is heading somewhere, and it has been for decades — long before anyone carried a barometer in their pocket.

The term is pressure tendency, and it isn't a loose label. It's defined, down to the time span.

Two numbers in one term

The American weather service NOAA defines pressure tendency as having two parts. The first is the pressure change: the net difference between the reading at the start and the end of a given period — and that period is usually exactly the three hours before an observation. The second part is the pressure characteristic: not just how much the pressure has moved, but how it moved along the way. Did it fall the whole time? Or fall and then turn?

The pattern is recorded in three categories: falling, rising, steady. A weather station reporting its pressure tendency is therefore saying two things at once — a size and a shape.

Why exactly three hours

Air pressure changes over hours, not seconds — a door slamming, or a lift moving, doesn't shift the number noticeably, while a real weather system does. A window therefore needs to be long enough to tell a genuine trend from noise, and short enough to still be about now rather than the whole day. Three hours hits that band. It's short enough to catch a front while it's on its way, and long enough that one odd data point doesn't tip the whole calculation.

Without a fixed window, the word falling is actually meaningless. The same pressure, read at the same moment, can be called falling, rising or steady, depending on whether you compare it with ten minutes ago, a day ago, or three hours ago. The definition solves that problem simply by settling on one: three hours, every time, for everyone. That's the whole point of calling it a standard and not just a habit.

The app's own version

Aneroid shows the pressure change — the first of NOAA's two numbers — directly below the dial, in hPa and with a sign. The word next to it, Falling, Rising or Steady, is the app's simplified version of the pressure characteristic: not the full categories from a synoptic observation, but the same idea in three words. It isn't an approximation of meteorology. It's meteorology's own measure, shown on a screen instead of in a weather log.

The World Meteorological Organization has collected the rules for how air pressure is measured and reported in its own handbook on instruments and methods of observation. The three-hour window isn't a digital invention. It was there before anyone wrote a line of code.

The tendency tells you what the pressure has done over the last three hours — not what it does to you. Aneroid is not medical equipment and predicts neither headaches nor anything else. It asks, and then it shows you what your own answers point to.
